Talks with a Cornish "Theme"

The following " NOT TO BE MISSED !" 5 talks are planned to take place in Church to ensure adequate seating.All start at 7pm. Adults £4 at the door (Under 16years free) includes tea / coffee.

Friday 11th September
"Feasts for Free" – foraging the Cornish hedgerows and coast line throughout the year, by Emma BallEmma, a qualified Horticulturalist, has worked at the Eden Project since it started 11 years ago and is passionate about plants and their multiple uses. Her illustrated talk will provide guidance on foraging and help us reconnect with nature and the numerous edible (and tasty !) plants that would have been forgotten about had it not been for foragers, historians, botanists and ethno botanists.

Friday 18th September
"Levant Mine" – the mine under the sea", by Chris Quick.Chris has been a guide at the Levant Mine since 1998 and has a vast depth of knowledge about mining in Cornwall. Chris will also show some amazing photographs of underground mining taken by the famous 1890s photographer, Borrows.

Friday 25th September
"Penwith Coastal Wildlife" – a photographic tour around the coast of Penwith, interspersed with natural history, by David Chapman
David is a well known professional photographer whose wild life photographs are respected in Cornwall and beyond. His images are often seen in numerous Cornish publications (such as Cornwall Today) as well as The Countryman, Home and Country, The Lady, Caravan Club magazine and Bird Illustrated. David has also published five books about Cornwall and is very involved with Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

Friday 9th October
"That Bloody Woman" – Emily Hobhouse (Cornwall’s forgotten heroine)
by John Hall.
John is the author of a book by the same name, which has received wide acclaim as a highly recommended and definitive portrait of this extraordinary woman. Emily Hobhouse (1860 – 1926), was a British welfare campaigner, who is primarily remembered for bringing to the attention of the British public, and working to change, the appalling conditions inside the British concentration camps in South Africa built for Boer women and children during the Second Boer War.

Friday 16th October
"More than just a Safety Lamp" – the life and times of Sir Humphry Davy
by David Ball ( Mab Kymygieth Hag Ilow) ("assisted" by his brother Michael)
This remarkably talented Cornish Scientist born in 1778, was responsible for a vast number of scientific discoveries and inventions that changed the world. This illustrated presentation will attempt to give a flavour of the times in which he lived and the highlights of his many achievements, including the Safety Lamp - He also wrote poetry!
